In the last year or so, there has been a particular style trend sticking out. People have described it as hyper- feminine or “coquette”. Popular references being Lana Del Ray, ballerina clothes, and barbie.
The coquette style features the color pink, bows, and lots of feminine dresses and skirts. Urban dictionary hints to a deeper meaning on the growing popularity of this style, describing the term coquette as,“mainly an aesthetic based on reclaiming girlhood and embracing fun, loving, bubbly personality” or as the, “appreciation of femininity, beauty, and gracefulness of being a woman.”
The background of this trend and style refers to the older idea that femininity, pink, bows, and things of that realm means not being treated seriously or like a child. Hyper feminine style is meant to be empowering; however, it has brought some heat as some people have interpreted it as “catering to the male gaze.”
Deeper meanings aside, “cute” clothes and pink have become very popular. Celebrities like Sydney Sweeny, Ariana Grande, and Lily-Rose Depp are often spotted in this style, and inspire younger women to embrace “girly” style without the criticism of being seen as immature, since many Gen-Z and teens grew up thinking “girly and pink” is uncool. Although there is nothing wrong with tomboy-ish style and it’s still just as popular, pink has taken over as the current trend.
