The Darkest Minds is a dystopian novel about a group of kids with powers that are trying to survive in Virginia. It was released in 2012. There are a group of soldiers, called PSF, that work for the government. PSF stands for psi special forces. This group of soldiers try to capture the kids and put them in a camp. The camps are full of kids sorted by power. In the camps, the kids are forced to work on different things like gardening or making shoes for the soldiers. There are 5 different powers you can have. If you are a green you have increased intelligence, if you are a blue you can move things with your mind, if you are yellow you can manipulate electricity, if you are a red you can control fire, and if you are an orange you can change people’s emotions and erase their memories.
The main character,Ruby, escapes from her camp with the help of one of the doctors at the camp. Along the way, Ruby finds a girl at a gas station and starts chasing her to make sure she is ok. Ruby chases the girl to a run down van in the woods. The little girl, named Zu, hides her in the van to run away from the doctor that helped Ruby escape. The van starts moving and when Ruby pops out from her hiding stops she meets two guys in the van with her and Zu. Their names are Lium and Chubs. Ruby stays with the group to help them not get taken from the PSFs.
The book is good, it has a hit of romance and humor. I fell in love with the characters fast and they add a lot of humor to the book. While reading the book I found it hard to put down. The chapters are long so it takes a lot longer to read but worth all of the time. The book has many twists and turns and plot twists.
The book has a movie that goes with it. You can find the movie on Prime, Youtube, and Apple Tv. The main character is played by Amandla Stenberg who plays rue in the hunger games. The movie is very similar to the book with some parts missing from it. At the beginning of the movie when the soldiers came to pick up Rue to bring her to the camp The movie went into more detail in that part more than the book did. Their characters are more funny in the movie because you can see how they interact with one another.
If you love funny characters then this book is for you. I would recommend this book/movie if you love romance and dystopian novels.
