The most recent Netflix documentary series is here, and it follows the story of a 22 year old girl and her boyfriend as they travel cross-country in their van. During this time, Brian Laundrie, the ex boyfriend of Gabby, showed signs of domestic violence. They ran into multiple interventions with law enforcement throughout their journey which ultimately raised suspicion on the couple.
After a few months into their travels, Petito went silent and the search began. The ending revealed that the probable killer of Gabby Petito was Brian Laundrie.
After this discovery, filming began a year later, and on February 17, 2025, The documentary, “American Murder: Gabby Petito”, was released to Netflix, and immediately caught many followers. This documentary is a 3 part series, with each episode being around an hour long.
I felt that the way Gabby’s story was covered did not do it justice and at times felt slow, or like information was being repeated. It wasn’t a long enough story to be split into 3 parts, and I think they dragged it out when it could have easily been a normal hour to hour and a half documentary.
Although the story in itself was very interesting, the execution did not impress. Many of the clips throughout the series were reused, and it made me wish there were more clips from Gabby’s youtube videos, or even more clips relating to the family of Brian Laundrie
Compared to other netflix documentaries such as “American Murder: The Family Next Door”, where justice was found, the ending of the docu-series did not have a conclusion, leaving viewers disappointed in not knowing the result of the case.
Netflix documentaries like “Girl In The Picture”, “Abducted In Plain Sight”, and “American Murder: Laci Peterson” , were all exceptional and all can be streamed on Netflix. These documentaries included an in depth background on the situation and brought interesting and emotional elements to the series.
In conclusion, “American Murder: Gabby Petito” was disappointing despite all of the hype on social media it had received previous to the launch. Although there were still aspects that I enjoyed, I would prefer to watch other documentaries on Netflix.
