The 2025 live-action “Snow White” has received mixed reviews from viewers. While the film has received quite a bit of controversy for the over-modernization of a classic film, I personally thought it was a compelling new twist on a modern classic.
When Disney announced the remake of this classic film I was quite excited, because I am a huge fan of classic Disney live-action remakes. I always find myself enjoying how Disney adds a bit of a modern twist on classic stories. However, walking into the theater to watch the 2025 live-action remake of Snow White, I did not have very high hopes or expectations. Like most others, I had seen so much negative media regarding the movie before going in to see it. Regardless of all the negative media, I was pleasantly surprised walking out of the theatre because of how much I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
After Disney announced the live-action remake of Snow White, people became quite skeptical because of the negative and stereotypical background of the princess. Afterall, her name comes from the color of her skin. Following Disney’s announcement of casting Rachel Zeigler as Snow White, even more controversy arose because of her Colombian descent. People online began criticizing Disney’s choice in actors, and making racist comments online.
I personally thought the updated storyline was quite refreshing. The modern twist was much less princessy than the original tale, making the story much more engaging to viewers. On one hand, the original film was heavily reliant on the prince for the life of Snow White, but in the new film the prince is a rebellious Robin-Hood style character that I found to make the storyline more compelling and interesting. Entering the theatre, I was skeptical of all of the CGI that was used in the film. After watching the movie, I was pleasantly surprised at how well Disney executed all of the CGI and how realistic they managed to make it all look. My overall favorite part of the movie was how realistic they managed to make all of the animals look. Usually, CGI animals tend to look quite creepy and unrealistic, but the animals in this movie looked very realistic and cute.
While the 2025 live-action Snow White” has sparked lots of conversation and controversy, my experience watching the film was ultimately positive. Despite my initial skepticism going into the theatre, I appreciated the modern twists and how they helped further the plot and storyline. Although there is quite a bit of controversy surrounding Disney’s casting choices, I thought the inclusion of new actors and actresses added refreshment to the original story. By moving away from the traditional fairytale storyline and creating a stronger, more independent Snow White with an intriguing new spin on the prince, the film successfully updated an original tale. Additionally, the impressive visual effects and realistic CGI added to the overall enchantment of the story. Overall, despite the mixed opinions, I believe this depiction of a classic tale is worth watching, and helps modernize a classic story.
