The MTV Video Music Awards, also known as the VMAs, took place in New York on Sep. 7. This year, the fight for a Moon Man was very competitive, and some results were very surprising.
Ariana Grande won the most sought after award of the night, Video of the Year, for her “brighter days ahead” musical short film, directed by Christian Breslauer. This musical science fiction short film accompanies Grande’s album “eternal sunshine”. She also won Best Pop and Best Longform Video for “brighter days ahead”.
Lady Gaga had big wins at the VMA’s as well, winning Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Bruno Mars for “Die with a Smile”. Gaga had 12 nominations in total this year, along with 18 previous VMA awards from past years. A pre-taped performance of “Abracadabra” and “The Dead Dance” was also shown at the awards show. Following her acceptance speech, Gaga immediately left the VMAs to perform at Madison Square Garden for her Mayhem Ball Tour.
Sabrina Carpenter’s album “Short n’ Sweet” took the spot for Album of the Year, another big award at the VMA’s. Carpenter also performed “Tears” from her new album, “Man’s Best Friend”, which came out on August 29. This performance featured famous drag queens and a rain-soaked dance break.
Alex Warren was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Pop, and Song of the Year for his song, “Ordinary”. Of these nominations, Warren took home the Best New Artist award. He also performed his hit song “Ordinary”, which is the longest running No. 1 song of the year.
“APT.” by ROSE & Bruno Mars won the Moon Man for Song of the Year. This song was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 45 weeks.
Tate McRae won Song of Summer for her song, “Just Keep Watching”. She also performed two of her hit songs, “Revolving Door” and “Sports Car”.
Other awards of the night included Best Alternative going to sombr for “back to friends” and Push Performance of the Year going to KATSEYE. Video Vanguard award and Best R&B went to Mariah Carey, who also performed multiple of her greatest hits. Artists like Doja Cat, Post Malone, and Jelly Roll also had performances at this year’s Video Music Awards.
This year’s MTV Video Music Awards was full of hit music, showcasing the amount of popular music that has been released in the past year. In addition, the VMA’s highlighted many female artists this year, with female artists dominating the awards this year.
