“The Summer I Turned Pretty” is an Amazon Prime tv show and is directed by Jenny Han, who also wrote the original books. The primary cast includes Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Jackie Chung, Rain Spencer, and Sean Kaufman.
Tung is the main character and plays as Belly Conklin. Briney plays Conrad Fisher and is one of Belly’s love interests. Casalegno plays as Jeremiah Fisher and is Belly’s other love interest. Chung plays as Laurel Park, Belly and Steven’s mother. Spencer plays as Taylor Jewel, Belly’s best friend and Steven’s love interest. Kaufman plays Steven Conklin, Belly’s brother and Taylor’s love interest.
The show is centered around Belly’s life as she navigates through love, family matters, and personal situations. Season one starts off with Belly, Steven, and their mother venturing to the beloved beach house that they spent summer at for their whole life.
Belly gets caught in a love triangle between the Fisher brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah. She ultimately decides to be with Conrad and they date for a short period and then break up at prom. The season ends with a shocking revelation that Conrad and Jeremiah’s mother has cancer for the second time.
This secret was not a surprise though to Conrad, who knew all along. The Fisher brothers then beg their mother to fight rather than giving up and she decides to do that for her boys.
Season two opens with the heartbreaking news that Susannah died from her cancer. Then all the kids get together to try and save their beach house before Susannah’s sister sells it. The teens decide to throw a party before the house is potentially sold. All the kids work hard enough and end up saving the beach house and then at the end of the season, Belly and Jeremiah share a kiss, which Conrad sees.
Conrad later confesses to Jeremiah that he still loves Belly but he decides to let her be happy with his brother and so Jeremiah and Belly begin their path.
Season three is centered around Belly’s life at college. At this point, Belly and Jeremiah have been together for four years. They had a good relationship until Belly finds out that while her and Jeremiah were on a “break” and he was on a school trip to Cabo, he cheated on her.
She decides to break up with him because of this and then she finds out her brother Steven was in a car accident. While at the hospital, Jeremiah shows up and Belly and him talk and he proposes, which she says yes to because she still loves him. They begin planning their wedding while Jeremiah is with his dad and Belly is at the summer house with Conrad, who came to help.
The night before the wedding, Conrad confesses to Belly that he still loves her and she turns him down and tells Jeremiah about it. The day of the wedding, Jeremiah disappears right up until the moment they’re supposed to walk down the aisle and he believes that Belly still loves Conrad, which she does.
They break up and Belly decides to go to Paris, Jeremiah stays with his dad, and Conrad goes to California. Once Conrad finds out that they didn’t get married, he starts writing to Belly and the day before her birthday he shows up. They spend the whole day together and he ends up staying the night but she decides she can’t be with him.
He leaves and she regrets her decision so she runs to him and stops him before he’s truly gone. She gets to him and tells him she loves him and they end up together. The season ends with Belly and Conrad coming back home to the summer house.
I honestly think that the ending was a bit rushed but I am happy with it because I wanted Belly to end up with Conrad. He just always matched her better compared to his brother and they never loved someone the way they loved each other.
