The National Honors Society accepts new members from the sophomore and junior classes every year. There are 165 eligible students to apply this year.

There is an application process each student has to go through if they choose to apply. In order to be considered to be a member in the RCHS chapter of NHS, students have to keep a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

There are many benefits towards students who decide to apply to NHS. NHS Advisor Ms. Stephanie Brooks speaks about a few benefits.

“It gets students involved in the school and community. It allows for multiple service opportunities. It gives students teamwork skills,” said Brooks.

Joining NHS helps showcase students who work hard in school and in their community. It recognizes the hard work they put in to get to where they are. Sophomore Sofia Smith talks about how she feels about being eligible to apply for the RCHS chapter of NHS.

“I feel grateful that I’m getting this opportunity, I know that the work I’ve been putting into school is being recognized. Being accepted would mean I get the chance to get more involved in the community and help out when I otherwise wouldn’t,” said Smith.

Many students feel as though NHS is a great opportunity to get involved in the community and create stronger bonds with other students. There are different aspects of NHS that allow students to grow as a person and learn for further opportunities in their futures.

The application process requires students to have recommendations from all of their teachers and someone outside of the school. As well as, an essay, verification sheet, and anything more that a student may have achieved.

The NHS organization represents and has a purpose towards our school and community, members are expected to reflect that. Which is why the application process is very detailed and specific. Choosing to become a member of NHS throughout high school is also something that colleges will look at when students begin applying.

After the application process is completed, students who were accepted will begin to attend general NHS meetings. Newly inducted memories will be formally inducted in a ceremony planned sometime in the middle of March.

Further into being a member of NHS, new members will be able to assist with a few major projects and more service within the community. A few major projects that NHS volunteers at are the Halloween Fair, Christmas Baskets, and Lip Sync Battle.

A big part about NHS here is to give students more of an opportunity to connect and grow in the community, as well as give them experience for any futures they may want. Senior Abigail Brooks talks about her experience and opinion with NHS.

“I am happy that I joined NHS. It’s allowed me to continue to help the community and make a difference in my area,” said Brooks. “Community service has always been a part of my life, but the other aspects of NHS have allowed me to further connect with other students and my area.”

Application packets are due on Friday, January 27th in room T7 and must be turned in directly to Ms. Brooks. If you have any further questions, contact Stephanie Brooks or the Rockbridge County High School website under activities and clubs.
