Theater Class Presents Chicago: Teen Edition
The theater class will be presenting Chicago: Teen Edition musical on March 23-25. It is a classic comedy that was set in Chicago during the Jazz Age. It is based on the play that was written by Maurine Dallas Watkins.
The musical will be held in the high school’s auditorium at 7pm each night. Tickets will be sold for $8 at the door and children that are 5 & under will get in for free.
Ms. Miranda Fitzgerald who teaches band, chorus, and theater is the music director and Ms. Erin Allen who teaches art and theater is the director for this musical.
The plot is with two women, Velma and Roxie who are searching for fame, but are being tried for murder in the process. The women end up in a county jail and create a plan to have a comeback into the spotlight once released from prison.
This musical was chosen because Ms. Allen and Ms. Fitzgerald discussed that what was best for the students improvement would be to choose a more difficult, but still a very accomplishable and exciting musical.
Ms. Erin Allen talks about her opinion on the chosen musical.
“Chicago: Teen Edition is more music and it’s more dancing and it is technically a little more difficult, but that is also wonderful because we have a lot of returning students who enjoy having a little more difficult material.” said Allen.
A requirement that the theater class has is that every single student has to audition. This is a requirement because the teachers in the theater department believe that every student needs to be aware of how it all works and give themselves the opportunity to try it.
“Every student needs to learn the process of auditions. To prepare material and the way that you are presenting yourself to an audience, even if you are a person who is working backstage,” said Allen.
The musical has 4 large leading roles: Velma Kelly, Roxie Hart, Billy Flynn, Mary Sunshine, and Mama Morten. The main cast of the show includes senior Grace Fure as Velma Kelly, sophomore Julia Newhall as Roxie, junior Bee Sackett as Billy, junior Holly Ramsey as Mary, and freshman Presley Brzostek as Mama.
Senior Grace Fure who will be a lead role talks about her thoughts on her part in the musical.
“I was thrilled to be cast as Velma, a strong female character I admire,” said Fure.
Many students who choose to audition and join theater here are looking for a further career and major in theater and acting. It is a great experience for students to have and it helps the students grow themselves in front of audiences or for the career they may choose in their life.
“I love everything about this show and I want to pursue theater after high school,” said Fure.
The students are very dedicated to the theater and the performance as a whole. Come watch them perform March 23-25, it will be a night to remember!
