Saturday March 9 was a rainy cold day but that did not stop the RCHS Boys Lacrosse teams from having their inter squad tournament. At 10 a.m., the team started an inter team game on their practice field. The boys played hard, even through the mudslides and cold rain pouring down on them.
After their game, while the boys went and cleaned themselves up, the parents started to get ready for their big picnic in the cafeteria. There were cheeseburgers and hot dogs along with all sorts of desserts, including cupcakes with lacrosse sticks on them.
Jay Whitelock is one of the RCHS lacrosse coaches. Whitelock grew up in Baltimore and coached youth lacrosse for twelve years, as well as six years of high school. He was also a ref for 25 officiated Maryland State Championships. He had many players go to the PIY in college. Whitelock has coached at RCHS for three years.
“We had a picnic after to start a tradition of a social event, and allow everyone to get together as a community to support the program,” said Whitelock.
There are about 20 players on each team with 40 players in total, which was a record number for the program. Varsity has four captions: seniors Daniel Grimm, Jackson Speers, and Sawyer Hattersley, as well as sophomore Andrew Kelly. Junior varsity has two captions: sophomore Liam Stillwell and sophomore Benjamin Davis.
Senior Jackson Speers has been playing lacrosse for quite a while. He plays long stick midfield.
“It will definitely be a fun year, and it is going to be great to ride out my last season with a lot of the guys I have been playing with since I was eight years old,” said Speers.
Their first official home game was Tuesday Mar. 19.
