With exam season coming up, the importance of taking notes is becoming necessary. There are many different ways to study for an upcoming exam, but the strategy that is most commonly used is taking notes.
Depending on the class, the style of taking notes may vary. Many students take pride in their notes, which is why these students were asked to share their note taking strategies.
Sophomore Schuyler Coleman shares how she takes her notes.
“I like to take notes when I have down time, if I feel rushed they turn out sloppy. Sometimes I take notes on my Rocketbook, which transfers my notes to my Google Drive and are usually easier to use if I am traveling somewhere,” said Coleman.
Coleman continues by adding what makes them unique.
“I also use clear sticky notes to trace things off of my computer, I like to do drawings to make my notes more fun and engaging,” said Coleman.
Some students don’t retain information from the slideshows provided by their teachers. Coleman describes why she prefers taking notes rather than viewing slides.
“I find the slideshows get repetitive after a while, and it becomes hard for me to focus. The few times I haven’t taken notes for units, I’ve found my studying to be less productive,” said Coleman.
Junior Drew Potter talks about his approach when taking notes.
“My strategy is to get everything down and then listen for any beneficial comments that can help me,” said Potter.
Potter then describes what he does to further his understanding of his notes.
“Whenever I’m done on a slide I scribble on my notes to stay focused because it can help with my memory, it’s called the scribble method,” said Potter.
Potter then explains the reasoning behind taking notes.
“My main motivation is that I need these notes to ensure I pass the test and get good grades. My notes benefit me because they give me good study material,” said Potter.
Sophomore Nadia Gaydos explains her way of note taking.
“For my notes, I use the notes on Canvas and go at my own pace. Whether note taking before class or after class. I just try to remove myself from outward influences or distractions and get into a zone for an hour or two,” said Gaydos.
Gaydos then talks about the practicality of taking neat notes.
“I am motivated to take notes because I understand their use and function, which gives me a practical idea on why to take the notes I am given,” said Gaydos.
Every student takes a different approach when taking notes during a class. With exam season quickly arriving, it is important to find what works best for each individual.
