At RCHS, school spirit is no joke, and a large part of that spirit comes from the various themed nights during football season. The themes encourage students to show their support for our varsity Wildcat football players from the student section.
Some student’s favored themes are Blue-Out, Hawaiian Night, and Construction Night. They are selected by our school’s Executive Council Blue and Silver chair members, Addie Flint and Schuyler Coleman. The Blue and Silver chair members are elected by the student body into the Student Council Association, (SCA).
Junior Schuyler Coleman describes that while the themes may sound straightforward, lots of behind the scenes work gets done.
“Me and Addie basically texted back and forth for a week and asked around. Then we met up and mashed it all together based on popular vote,” said Coleman.
These themes always spark lots of extra excitement, not only for the football game, but also for the fun of dressing up and cheering together as a school; however, choosing themes isn’t always easy.
Senior Addie Flint shares the not so easy process that happened before sharing the themes with students.
“When we chose the game themes this year, Coleman and I sat down and made a huge list of a bunch of themes we thought would be really fun. Then we narrowed it down to our top ten,” said Flint.
Flint also describes a new theme that was added, and it hasn’t been done in a while.
“We have a jersey night that’s coming up,” said Flint. “We haven’t done that in a few years, so I’m really excited to see everyone dressed up for that.”
Not only does the spirit of being in the stands and the excitement of selecting themes thrill people, but also just the process of getting ready.
Sophomore Chase Potter, who is always showing the sports team his support, had a lot to say about preparation for the themes.
“One of my favorite is Hawaiian night,” said Potter “I like anything we can kinda just go all out with to show our support”
The student section isn’t only for dressing up and cheering, as most every student in the stands says it feels like an environment or united group. All of the students are focused on cheering our players to victory and pushing the players to strive.
Our most recent game against Parry McCluer, was themed as a Blue-Out, and students did not disappoint. The stands were packed with people clad in full blue, and many students covered fully in bright blue paint. It was a lively game that night, filled with lots of shouting, cheering, clapping, and laughter.
“Our past game, how we did a blue out, just looking up and seeing all these people dressed in blue and having painted their bodies in blue, it just shows that they care,” said Potter. “It really pushes the players to strive more.”
Overall, the student spirit not only brings our students together as a uniting group, but also will hopefully help push our wildcat football team to a successful and fun season!
