In June 2026, Rockbridge County High School is planning a trip to Ecuador, Peru with the supervision of Professor Andy Martin and Professor Jamie Youngblood. After spending several days in Ecuador, Spanish teachers will fly to the capital city of Quito. There is a 3 day trip to Galapagos Islands. They are also visiting Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lima (Peru).
Students can see historical buildings, ruins, abandoned villages of Inca, try the local cuisine and see some rare species of animals in the Galapagos Islands. The teachers believe there are several advantages to joining the trip.
First of all, Machu Picchu and Galapagos Islands might close down in the near future because of the influence of tourists to its ecosystem, so it could be an opportunity to see these places before they are closed to the public. Secondly, there is a chance that you can see some rare species of animals and birds that have been introduced to the Red Book. Thirdly, if you are eager about exploring the world around you and learning about new cultures, this trip can show you things you may never get to see otherwise.
Youngblood helped to coordinate the trip to Ecuador.
“This is a once in a lifetime trip, most people dream about these destinations, but now they have an opportunity,” said Youngblood.
She is excited about seeing turtles in Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu.
There are no requirements to attend the trip, you just have to be a high school student, and that’s it! There is no required GPA and students don’t have to speak Spanish, because both supervisors, Martin and Youngblood, speak Spanish. There also will be a guide and translator.
All meals, transportation, hotel stays, flights, tickets to attractions are provided at the cost of the trip. There are already 3 students who signed up for the trip.
