The Community Table connects those at risk of hunger and those able and willing to assist. Everyone is invited to share a meal and enjoy a night out, free of charge at The Community Table’s “restaurant without a cash register”. They usually serve lunches and dinners in Lexington at the RARA’s building and takeaway lunches in Fairfield at Fairfield Presbyterian Church.
Food is sponsored by Sweet Treats Bakery. The Community Table is a United Way approved agency and they work in close association with local governments, social service organizations, and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. They depend on the generosity of our local community, grants, and donations to keep cooking. Many people seem to enjoy coming to TCT for Monday dinners and Wednesday lunches.
Lisa Packer and Ginger Bomer are organizers and administrators at Community Table.
“We depend on volunteers willing to donate their time and resources. Volunteers serve guests, bus tables, prepare meals, and provide a much-needed helping hand. No experience is required” said Bomer.
A simple example of lunches served for Wednesday lunches are Ethiopian Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Eggplant, Tomato, and Egg Stir Fry & Basmati White Rice. Meals are prepared and designed by TCT Chef David Faulds and by Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee.
“We are trying to build a community by helping those who are in need and gathering community spirit together, and so far we are managing to do so,” said Packer.
Guests usually enjoy these nights out and see them as an opportunity to gather and spend some time together. So do volunteers, Avery Dennerd is a sophomore at Washington and Lee University and is a volunteer at TCT.
“I started volunteering for TCT last year and it does something valuable to the community by providing food and an opportunity to be served and have that dining experience,” said Dennerd.
People who are eager to volunteer can contact Ginger Bomer by email, which is [email protected].
