In the month of November, you may have seen people going from door to door selling various baked goods or bracelets. While a sweet treat for a few dollars seems like a fair trade, it’s more than just a tasty snack for the Nurse Aide students.
Last year Pat Conner was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer and became unable to move and care for herself. When the Nurse Aide community found out, they quickly started brainstorming how to best help her, and decided on raising money. Students began to make bracelets with cancer representing colors, and many delicious baked goods. In the five days they sold cookies and cakes, they managed to raise over 2,000 dollars for Conner.
Gracie Pelter, a student in the Nurse Aide class, shed some light on the baking and selling process.
“The thought of helping someone in need and getting out there was a big motivation,” said Pelter. “People were really gracious and we managed to sell tons of baked goods and bracelets for her”
Heather Higgins, the teacher of the Nurse Aide class organized the fundraiser and had a lot to share about it.
“It was so rewarding to see her happy, she even cried,” Higgins said. “She rang the cancer bell yesterday, which is a huge step for her”
The cancer bell is a common celebration for beating cancer, and it symbolizes the end of their treatment and battle with the disease.
