Each year in the spring, Model UN travels to Chapel Hill where they put these skills to use, and act as the United Nations. They are currently preparing for this conference.
Model UN is a club where students practice skills such as collaboration, speaking, critical thinking, negotiation, and problem solving by role playing as delegates to the UN and simulating meetings.
Chris Gallagher, the model UN’s faculty sponsor believes that there is more to Model UN than just winning debates.
“My favorite aspect is seeing students grow as communicators, collaborators and critical thinkers. Model UN isn’t just about winning debates, it’s about learning to work collaboratively with others,” Gallagher said.
Junior Dorothy Lewis, who is in her second year of doing model UN, enjoys the teamwork aspect of it.
“I really like being able to work with people. My favorite part of it is when we go to Chapel Hill every year,” Lewis said.
Senior Model UN member Youssef Azab describes what a typical Model UN event looks like.
“We get assigned committees before the actual conference itself. We write a short essay describing our position on whatever topic we’re supposed to talk about, which we do a lot of research for. The event is a lot of fun because you get to learn about a topic that you weren’t really familiar with before,” Azab Said
“I’m excited to meet new people, because that’s one of the things that’s really great about Chapel Hill is especially if you’re into politics or you’re into knowing more about global events, there’s a whole bunch of like minded people over there you can talk to about it,” Azab Said.
Azab describes how the trip went last year.
“Last year it went quite well. No one won an award last year, but it was really tough competition. Everyone had a bunch of fun. After the actual conference, we got to hang out and that was fun,” Azab Said.
