On Thursday Jan. 16, rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors had the opportunity to attend the annual RCHS Curriculum Night. This event allows students to learn more about classes available to them for the upcoming year.
Teachers of all subjects and electives set up tables full of information and examples from their courses to better help students understand what they are signing up for.
English 11 Ashlee Payne talked to many students about her class, and how it compares to others.
“Curriculum Night is an excellent way to get student questions answered about the various courses we offer. For example, I often get to chat about the difference between DE and AP English 11,” Payne said. “I’m also able to give better recommendations on what course to take because of the one-on-one conversations that can occur.”
Rising junior Dmitriy Billias attended Curriculum Night.
“Curriculum [N]ight benefitted me by learning a bit more about the classes I will take next year and it let me meet the teachers and hear what they had to say about their class,” Billias said.
The school often encourages students to bring a parent or guardian so they can also get a feel for next years’ schedule.
“I don’t often get a chance to meet parents outside of parent teacher conferences, so this night is a nice introduction,” Payne said.
Billias, as well as many other students, take part in this event because it gives them the opportunity to meet their potential future teachers. Not only do students feel this way, but teachers too.
“Curriculum night for teachers is a way to meet potential students and put them at ease. I get to explain the differences that my courses offer and hope that students choose one to take (as enrollment in courses does factor into if the course happens the next year and how many sections occur). It’s nice to have those one-on-one conversations and help students figure out the right path for them,” Payne said.
