As prom season approaches, students are growing eager for the special night. Each year brings in a new wave of fresh dress trends. There are many different styles, cuts, materials, and colors to choose from, which can make finding a dress quite overwhelming for such a special occasion. While everyone has their own opinion on what style of dress is best, one debate continues: Easter dress or sparkly dress?
In 2024, the biggest prom dress trend was the “Easter dress” trend. In contrast to the poofy, sparkly, bright, and over-the-top “regular” prom dresses, the “Easter” prom dress is characterized by pastel colors, floral patterns, and an overall likeness to what you would wear to an Easter brunch.
This trend caused quite a bit of controversy online. Each year, many girls post prom transitions on Tik Tok and Instagram showing their dresses. Around March of last year, as girls began to post their prom videos, comment sections became flooded with negative remarks stating that the dresses are too casual and plain for such an occasion. On the other hand, there are people who like this dress trend, because the dresses can be worn to more occasions than prom, making them a more practical and sustainable choice.
Last year, senior Taina Covington chose a sparkly, more classic style prom dress. This year she is looking for a less sparkly, more simplistic style dress.
“Last year, I wore a black and sparkly dress and I liked it at the time. This year, I am looking for a green dress without sparkles, I am going for more of a fairy princess vibe. Honestly, my style has just changed over the past year, making me change my choice in dress style,” Covington said.
While in 2025, the “Easter dress” trend will still be trending, many students will be looking for the more traditional style of prom dresses featuring extravagant ruffles, sparkles, and tulle elements.
Junior Page Wright explains what she is searching for when shopping for her prom dress.
“I am looking for a dress that is big and has ruffles or is kind of puffy. I do not want anything too crazy, but I would like to have something that is comfortable. I would rather have a flowy dress than a tight one, because I feel like a lot of people always choose a more form fitting one, and I also just think the style of a big ruffly one is more eye-catching,” Wright said.
Whether students like more simple dresses, or all out maximalist styles, there really is something for everyone. As prom season quickly approaches, it will be interesting to see how students’ personal preferences play a role in the overall trend of 2025 prom dresses.
