A new and fun opportunity for crochet and knitting lovers has made its way to Rockbridge County High School.
Michelle Steiner, English 11 and 12 teacher, is sponsoring the Yarnicats: a yarn club where students meet at 8:00 on Wednesdays before school in room 107.
“Personally, I hope to share my love of knitting and crochet with anyone who would like to learn. As club sponsor, I hope to create a welcoming environment for crafting with yarn. The students selected the name “Yarnicats” for the club, and I think they’re off to a great start,” Steiner said.
Everyone is welcome to take part in the knitting or crocheting activities, as well as getting the opportunity to learn new hobbies.
“We have talked about doing a group project or a project for charity in the future, but the club is still very new. This is a student-led club, so I will defer to them on specific goals,” Steiner said .
There are many different projects that you can do in the club. Junior Alison Rager is a member of the yarnicats club.
“My first ever project was a granny square, a headband, and lots of bandanas. My current project is a hooded scarf,” Rager said.
There are also problems that can go wrong when crocheting and knitting, but even so the people who do it love it.
“The pros are having a hobby that is relaxing and you end up with something you can use after you’re done. The cons [are] how expensive buying supplies is and how non-crocheters complain about prices for commissions,” Rager said.
All the students in the club are working hard learning and working on their projects.
“Everyone in the group is working on their own projects right now. We have people who already knit and crochet, and some who are just learning,” Steiner said.
Steiner states that they might bring extra yarn and hooks for new members that may not have the tools and resources for the club activities. If you are interested in joining, contact Mrs. Steiner in room 107, or by email [email protected] .
