Being a small business owner during the COVID-19 pandemic adds a new spin to one’s life. In late March, when everything began to shut down, many businesses had to close their doors. For many business owners, their shops and restaurants were their only source of income. In Lexington,Va., with the help of the community around them, many shops were able to remain open.

Sadly, Books & Co. closed their shop. However, they are still open online. Gladiola Girls was an upbeat and urban clothing shop for women that had to close their doors. Legendary Eats and Meta Meals are food places that have opened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just Games was able to take the old building of Books & Co. and has done great. Just Games is a shop that has all different types of Board Games and offers in-life game playing with community members. Just games opened in their new spot on October 14.  PPP Loans and help from the government allowed several businesses to survive. Restaurants were able to still operate via curbside pickup or delivery.

How can each person do their part in helping these businesses? Ordering takeout or curbside pickup is a great way to support the restaurants. Go to Sweet Things to get some ice cream or purchase a cup of coffee from Lexington Coffee Shop or Pronto to show your support. With restrictions being slowly lifted, people are now permitted to go inside shops while wearing  masks. Lexington, Va.  was not hit as hard as other towns and cities due to surrounding help. Business owners are slowly being able to gain back what they lost in the beginning of the pandemic. If able, doing one’s part to help out these small businesses will be  greatly appreciated.
