While many people don’t particularly celebrate Halloween, many people have one goal in mind: to hoard candy. The tradition which people who choose to celebrate Halloween is Trick o’ Treating, or going around to houses in neighborhoods asking for candy from strangers. When one walks up to a house to ask for candy, there is much suspense of what they will receive. Everyone hopes to get two good candies from people, however much of the time they only receive one measly candy. In Lexington, many of the main streets, Jackson, Main street, Edmonson and many others are shut down temporarily for the Halloween festivities. This is so that kids can have a safe and fun environment to go Trick o’ Treating without the hassle of worrying about cars. Also, main street often closes earlier in the evening for Trick o’ Treaters to go to local businesses in hopes of getting candy, or treats.
Although there are many different types of candy, most people want to be given ones such as M&M’s ,Reese’s, Nerds, and Smarties. These are the main candies that people expect to get and enjoy receiving, but what is considered the best and why? We reviewed many candies ranging from chocolates to savory sweets like smarties. The categories we rated these candies based on were sweetness, crunchiness, texture, and taste.
The first sweet we chose to review was a common candy to receive on Halloween, Smarties. After tasting, we concluded that the candy was all around good, the taste was sweet, yet it had a bitter after taste that left your mouth mourning for more. The texture was smooth to the touch, but when you sunk your teeth into it, the crunch was good.
Following the tasting of the Reese’s cups, we concluded that it was also good but better than the smarties. The edges of the Reese’s were crunchy, but the inside parts were soft. It had a peanut butter taste, while also having a sweet chocolate taste. Overall it is something unusual, but exciting to receive on Halloween.
Next, we tasted the Nerds and thought that they also had a good taste and rated them second out of the three. The initial taste is very sour or bitter but then it flows into a sweet smooth taste that covers your whole mouth. Similarly, the inside of the nerd is chewy and very gummy like, which significantly adds to the overall taste and flavor.
Finally, we tried the M&Ms. They were hard and crunchy on the outside, but the inside was smooth and soft. They were very sweet and had lots of chocolate, and they left a really good aftertaste of chocolate in our mouths.
In conclusion, we decided that the best candy was Reese’s Cups giving it a score of 10/10. Our second favorite candy was M&Ms, with a score of 9/10. After that was Nerds, with a score of 8/10. Finally, Smarties was fourth, with a score of 6/10.
