Peterson Completes Breakthrough College Career
QJ Peterson, senior at Virginia Military Institute and co-captain of the basketball team, has shattered numerous records over a four-year span, and received conference honors over each of his four years. Peterson scored a school record 46 points against Mercer on Feb. 25, 2016, which also tied the most points in a Division I game during that year. This past season, Peterson became the sixth all-time player at VMI to score over 2,000 points in a career.
“It is an amazing feeling, I kind of dreamed as a kid growing up,” said Peterson. “I have to thank God, teammates, family, and all those behind the scenes who really believed in me in accomplishing 2,000 points.”
Peterson scored 589 points in his senior season, 200 field goals, 78 three-point field goals, 111 free-throws, and averaged 19.6 points per game. This season, Peterson was named the Southern Conference (SOCON) scoring leader, and had numerous double-digit games.
“My best game at VMI would be against the number one team in the conference, Chattanooga, where I had 40 points, and we won on the road by 16,” said Peterson.
After breaking multiple records and earning conference honors over his collegiate career at VMI, Peterson has aspirations for furthering his basketball knowledge.
“I want to play professionally, and play as long as I can, and go from there,” said Peterson.
In the first round of the SOCON tournament, VMI lost to Samford University 79-61. Peterson finished the final game of his collegiate career with a game-high 26 points.
“My favorite memory at VMI would have to be all the times I get the opportunity to come here and play in front of the core,” said Peterson. “I will never get those moments back and I have to cherish them every time I come out here.”
