The ACE Team prepares for their first meet.

The ‘Cat’s Academic Team held their first and only home meet Monday, Nov. 13. The A-team won the match with a perfect score of 3-0. The A-team consists of juniors Miranda Johnson, Tieran McClure, Will Hanstedt, and senior Maggie Lee. Lee is the captain of the A-team. The ‘Cats have seven meets in total, one at each school in their district. After the home meet, a few members of the team went to the Cave Spring Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 18. The A-team placed first out of 32 teams. Since the A-team placed so well in the invitational, there are high hopes for the season.

“I think our A-team is going to be very successful this year. We work very well together. A lot of teams normally have one main person doing all the work and scoring all the points, but our team is very balanced. We all help each other out,” said Johnson.

The A-team hopes to build off  the momentum they have created, and use it to continue winning.

“If we continue working together as strongly as we are now, I think it will be a good season,” said Johnson.

The ACE Team practices every Friday morning at 7:30 to prepare for their meets. Their practices normally last around 45 minutes.

“It is a bit early right now to tell how the season will turn out. We have only had one meet and one tournament, but I think we are going to do well. Our current team works together extremely well and we balance each other out. Between the four of us, I think we have everything covered,” said Hanstedt.

Sponsor of the ACE team and calculus teacher, Chris McGrath, has been involved in the team for many years. He makes sure the team stays on track and focuses enough each practice.

“The A-team is doing very well this season. They are undefeated, and we only have one more match left in our district; hopefully we will come out on top,” said McGrath.

The A-team has high hopes for this season. Their goal is to make it to states, and McGrath and Lee can picture that happening.

“I think we are going to get even better as the season goes on, and we have time to settle in. We would all love to go to states this year, but there is no guarantee. McGrath and Lee think there is a decent possibility, given how well we are doing so far. In order to achieve this goal, we are going to have to work really hard and practice a ton,” said Hanstedt.
