On Sept. 20, The WNBA began their playoffs. Eight teams made it to the first round, each wanting to bring home the title. The first round consists of a best-of-three series by each match up; the winners go on to play best-of-five. The finalists will then compete in the last, best-of-five series for the championship. There are over thirteen games to be played, and one question stands out: Who will win it all?
While the playoffs are still continuing, the focus will be on the first round matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun. In the first game, Connecticut took an early lead. Indiana’s rookie of the year, Caitlin Clark was slow to action, and was relatively shut down by the Sun defense.
This was crucial because Clark is a playmaker, and shutting her down reduces the team’s chance of getting onto a rhythm. In the end, Connecticut stole the first win 93-69 and with that started their 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. The second game was much closer. Clark had 25 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds, and each quarter the difference in the score was kept to single digits.
Unfortunately for the Fever, Alyssa Thomas of the Sun was unstoppable. She went on a 10 point scoring spree to end the quarter with Connecticut ahead. Thomas ended up with 19 points and 13 assists in total. Although Indiana out rebounded Connecticut 43-29, the Sun still secured their second win and knocked Indiana out of the playoffs.
Other games to watch are the previous champions, the Los Vegas Aces, vs. the no.1 ranked team, New York Liberty; who are currently in the middle of their semi-final series.
