The Wildcats Indoor Track team has been preparing for the start of their season. Sophomore Finbar Looney, whose main event is the shot put, has been working hard to prepare for the first indoor track meet of the season.
“We’ve been practicing basically every day after school, working on our individual events, and just getting as good at them as possible for our first meet this Saturday.” Looney said.
The meet to kick off the season on Dec. 11 resulted in the girls 4×200 relay team placing third. Freshman Ariana Mitchell also qualified for states in high jump with a jump of 5 feet, and sophomore Celia Jones placed 10th in the 300 meters.
The track team has had many struggles in the start of this season. Between the cold weather and having to practice outside.
Sophomore Celia Jones shared one of her major struggles regarding this year’s season.
“One of my main struggles this year was my ankle injury,” Jones said. “At the end of the cheer season I injured my ankle causing me to not be able to do much running until recently” Jones said.
Jones has worked hard to get through this injury so that she can hopefully compete at the first track meet of the season on Dec. 11 at Fork Union.
This year they have had a significant decline in the number of people on the team. During the 2023-2024 indoor track season, the team had about 45 members. During this year’s season they only have seven.
They hope to get more members next year, but are going to do the best they can this year with the limited roster.
