Last season the wrestling team had a winning record in both the District and non District matches. It was a successful season last year with 5 individuals advancing to states, and the team placing fourth overall at Regionals.
This season the team of 34 looks forward to continuing the success from years past and advancing more wrestlers to the state competition.
Sophomore Billy Chittum is a returning wrestler and told us about his goals and preparation for the season ahead.
“We’ve been preparing by getting our stamina up and working hard every day, showing up even through Thanksgiving,” Chittum said.
Chittum is excited for the new season and hopes that all of the new wrestlers will help to improve the team even more.
Freshman Natasha Shorter is one of the two girls that are wrestling, she is coming up from the middle school program and she told us about how she prepared for the season and how she feels about it.
“I’ve prepared by going to practices over break, and going to practices every day, and I’m excited for the rest of the season,” Shorter said.
With being one of the few girls on the team, Shorter really has to work hard to show that she’s just as good as the boys. She does this by working extra hard and having determination.
Sophomore Colin Stanley is a first year wrestler for the Wildcats. He told us what he did to prepare for the season and what he is excited for this season.
“We do a lot of conditioning, I’ve been getting into my weight class, and I really like it… I’m excited for my first matches,” Stanley said.
Being a first year wrestler isn’t easy because you’re coming into a sport that some people have played since they could walk. The determination and commitment from Stanley really shows how much he is willing to do for the team so they can win big this season.
The team this year looks to continue what they have done in years past, hoping for a strong performance in district matches and making a run for states. This won’t be something that comes without practice and perseverance though so they will continue to work hard in practice, scrimmages, and matches.

How about your returning girls state placer, Mia Marando. She is the first ever girl to place at states for girls wrestling in the history of your school.
Looking forward to the girls seeing competition in the VHSL Girls Sanctioned tournaments this year as long as the coach does his job and doesn’t ignore Title IX, as he has been the past 2 seasons.
