As the winter sports season comes to a close, here is a recap of how the VHSL state competition for swimming went. Five members of the boys team qualified in both individual events and relays. The boys that qualified include Spencer Pfaff, Keagan Black, Ru Bucy, Ben Gresham, and Jacob Barney.
Senior Spencer Pfaff qualified for the 50 and 100 Freestyle. He placed first in both of his events, and broke the high school record for the 50. This was set about 20 years ago by William Copeland. This was a huge success for Pfaff. He is continuing his swimming career and committed to Grinnell College.
Junior Keagan Black qualified for the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. He placed 5th in both of these. He will continue to swim as a senior on the team next year.
“I’m excited for what’s to come in the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to seeing myself but also my teammates improve and become contenders,” Black said.
Freshman Ru Bucy Qualified for the 500 freestyle. He placed 17th, one place away from making the consolation final. He was the only freshman to qualify in an individual event.

The team qualified for the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. The medley relay, placing 8th consisted of Keagan Black, Jacob Barney, Spencer Pfaff, and Ben Gresham. The freestyle relay, placing 6th consisted of Ben Gresham, Ru Bucy, Keagan Black, and Spencer Pfaff.
Ben Gresham was a freshman qualifier for both of the relays. He has improved his time greatly during his first year on the team.
“Going to states was a really fun experience and I was really happy I got the chance to go. Our team was good enough that I was able to go as a freshman which was really cool and I probably wouldn’t have been able to do it with a different team,” Gresham said.
The team had a strong season overall, and states was a great way to finish it.
