With the start of the spring sports season, ten teams have kicked off their schedule: baseball (6-7), boys (3-5) and girls lacrosse (12-3), boys and girls outdoor track, boys (2-7) and girls soccer (5-3), softball (4-6), and boys (5-1) and girls tennis (0-9).
Baseball: The varsity baseball team working on their cooperation and improving with each other.
Sophomore player Elijah Sorrels is one of the team members.
“We’re working together and we’re building off each other and finding each other’s rhythm,” Sorrells said.
One of the team’s goals is to help the seniors on the team experience a good final high school season.
“I believe that a team goal we all have is trying to get the seniors as good of a season as we can possibly give them,” Sorrells said.
Soccer: The boys varsity soccer team has had many improvements since last season, including the team’s defense and their new head coach change has introduced new play-styles and objectives.
Sophomore player Charles Cosgriff, who recently scored the tying and game winning goals against East Rock, has noticed some changes with the team.
“The team has improved with our defending… we just went through a recent change with our coach, the new coach has brought in some new ideas”. Cosgriff said.
The boys soccer team is looking to bring back some playoff wins and a season to be proud of.
“[The team goal is] to get a winning record and hopefully make it to districts and win districts,” Cosgriff said. This will be a major goal, since last year’s 1-12 season.
Track: After the winter’s indoor track season, with a small seven member, yet dedicated team, spring marks the start of outdoor track. A few more students participate in outdoor track, with 11 members, and they seem to enjoy it better because of the warmer weather and more teammates.
Freshman Ariana Mitchell, who is ranked in the state for high jump, has brought in a lot of skill to the team.
“The season is going well so far, most of us have PR’d [personal record] in a lot of our stuff, and the team has improved a lot from indoor track,” Mitchell said. “More people have joined and their times are getting better and the team’s goal is to make it to states.”
Boys tennis has been off to an impressive start, with only one loss, however the girls team has yet to get a win.
Both boys and girls lacrosse teams have had great kick offs to their season, especially girls with an outstanding 12-3 record.
The spring sports season has been off to a great start, and the teams hope to make this their best season yet.
