This August, the golf team welcomed new coach Garret Huffman, RCHS alum and former golfer, to replace David Miller, who retired from the position after 13 years.
Garret Huffman is 22 years old and is from Rockbridge County. This is his first coaching job, as he recently graduated from King University in Tennessee, where he majored in exercise science with a minor in education.
Huffman was asked how his transition to working at RCHS was.
“So far it’s been good. The good thing is the group that we have is really great too. They make it pretty easy,” Huffman said.
Huffman has been playing golf since he was 4 years old. When offered this job, he knew it would be an awesome opportunity.
Not only does Huffman coach golf, but he also teaches physical education at Maury River Middle School.
“I like being active as it is, but it was always my goal to hopefully be able to coach and teach as well. I just enjoy being around sports,” Huffman said.
He was then asked what he was looking forward to this golf season.
“My main goal was just to get to know everybody, the players and hopefully their families too. I like to have a close group, just where everybody can connect,” Huffman said. “Goal wise, hopefully we can win the district, and then hopefully place well in regions.”
As for practice, his team typically goes out to play on a 9-hole course or out on the range to practice chipping and putting.
Huffman finds it very important to develop good relationships with the athletes.
“I think it’s a good thing to just get to know them that way. You can know how to coach them as well, because everybody needs to be coached differently,” Huffman said.
Outside of coaching and teaching, Huffman likes to spend time with his fiance, spend time with his family, and play other sports such as baseball. He, however, spends most of his time playing golf.
“I like to play a lot of golf myself,” Huffman said.
