The first week of this year’s college football season started on Saturday, Aug. 23. It featured four top 25 match ups including the first game of the season, the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin, Ireland. Each year, the Aer Lingus Classic includes different teams from around the country. This year the Aer Lingus Classic was a Big 12 rivalry game between Iowa State and Kansas State, also known as Farmageddon. The last game of the weekend was TCU at UNC on Monday, Sep. 1. This game was the collegiate debut of six time Super Bowl winning Coach Bill Belichick as UNC’s head coach.
Week one of college football also brought a sad end to an era. Lee Corso who has been a host of “College Gameday” since its inception in 1987. Corso was a quarterback and cornerback for Florida State University where he had the school record for most interceptions in school history until he was later tied by Dion Sanders. Corso is most famous for his headgear picks, where he picks who he will win the premier game of the week. Corso has been making these picks since Oct. 5. 1996 when he made his first pick of Brutus Ohio State’s mascot, and he made his last pick 29 years later on Aug. 30. 2025 once again picking Brutus.

College football starts off with the same kind of games that it always does. Power four schools pay D1 FCS (football championship schools the second highest level of college football) or just a smaller group of five school millions of dollars to blow them out in front of a smaller crowd in their home stadium. This year there were two major upsets: Florida State defeated the University of Alabama 31-17 at Florida State when Alabama was ranked 8th in the nation, the University of South Florida defeated Boise State University when they were ranked 25th in the nation.
