The golf team has swung into a new era of both leadership and strong performances. One main change this season has been this take over of new coach, Garrett Huffman, as a result of former coach, David (Weenie) Miller’s retirement. The golf season started in August and they have had matches nearly every week.
Senior Harrison Tanner has been playing golf since his freshman year and recently committed to Southern Virginia University for golf. Tanner reflects on how the season is currently going for him, how he serves as a leader on the team, and how he has personally improved.
“It’s been a really good season so far. As a senior, I have been making sure everyone is getting along and improving on their game. Personally, I’ve rebuilt a lot of confidence since last season’s struggles,” Tanner said.
This year, the team gained a new coach, Huffman. Huffman is a RCHS alumnus and has played golf himself since he was little. This is his first coaching job. Tanner shares his opinions on Huffman.
“I absolutely love Coach Huffman, we all get along with him very well,” Tanner said.
Sophomore Davis Welsh has been playing for the past two years. He explains how the season is

going.
“The season has been very good and we’ve been doing pretty good this year. We just won districts which was pretty exciting. I’ve definitely improved since the start of the season. I’ve had a couple of bad rounds this year, but it is just part of golf,” Welsh said.
Welsh then shares what his favorite moment from this past season was.
“My favorite moment from this season was when we competed at the Homestead and I almost got a hole in one,” Welsh said.
On Sept. 22, the golf team traveled to Ironwood for their fourth district competition. The team was the Shenandoah District Champion with a score of 322 to win the title. Tanner led the team with a score of 76, followed by sophomore Joe Vargas with a score of 78, senior Dean Fafatas with a score of 81, Welsh with a score of 87, sophomore Hendrick Colvin with a score of 94, and junior Fin Looney with a score of 104.
Along with the team recognition, some individual players got recognized for individual All- District Honors. Tanner, Fafatas, and Vargas got recognized as first team and Welsh was recognized as second team.
To finish out their season, the golf team traveled to Spotswood Country Club on Sep. 29 to compete in the regional championships. The team placed fifth overall at the competition with a score of 327. The Cats were led by Tanner with a score of 78.
