Every year, people travel around the world to see family and friends for the holiday season. With the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the U.S. in March, travel has become limited. Even in the state of Virginia, there are limits on the amount of people at social gatherings.

According to NBC12 Newsroom, “When it comes to social gatherings, the governor dropped the limit to 10 people.  It was previously 25. Social gatherings include parties, celebrations, or other social events. The limit does not apply to religious services, employment settings, or educational settings.”

Because of this limit, some holiday celebrations will be reduced and eliminated, as families across the state are advised to limit their social gatherings. The increase in COVID-19 cases has caused limitations and restrictions that will affect people’s holiday celebration. These limitations affect national travel too.

According to the CDC, “High or increasing levels of COVID-19 cases in the gathering location, as well as in the areas where attendees are coming from, increase the risk of infection and spread among attendees. Family and friends should consider the number of COVID-19 cases in their community and in the community where they plan to celebrate when deciding whether to host or attend a gathering.”

Besides the number restrictions, there are more suggestions in place for people gathering. The CDC also adds, “Require guests to wear masks. At gatherings that include persons of different households, everyone should always wear a mask that covers both the mouth and nose, except when eating or drinking. It is also important to stay at least six feet away from people who are not in your household at all times.”

Besides the national numbers, it’s good to take a look at COVID-19 cases in Rockbridge County. Should people be gathering this holiday season? As of Dec. 14, there are 374 cases in Rockbridge County, 282,000 cases in Virginia, and 16.4 million cases in the U.S. according to the New York Times.

According to the statistics, travel for the holidays should be as limited as possible. Medical experts also recommend staying inside but wearing a mask when outside.

What if people need to travel? If so, how do citizens travel safely. CNN travel writer Marnie Hunter interviewed medical experts on how to travel cautiously.

If you do choose to travel, try to keep gatherings small and take precautions,” said Dr. Henry Wu in Marnie Hunter’s article.

In conclusion, try to limit your visitation with other people to as scarce as possible. Stay inside, practice good hygiene, social distance, and wear a mask.
