Georgia Rolls in Big Win Over TCU
On Jan. 10, 2023, Georgia played TCU in the College Football National Championship at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Georgia was coming into the game as 12.5 point favorites, with an undefeated 14-0 record, including a 42-41 win over Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. These expectations were well exceeded, thrashing TCU 65-7 to win their second championship in a row. Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was named the offensive MVP of the game, completing 18/25 of his passes for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns.
TCU kept it close in the first quarter, scoring on a 75 yard drive including a 60 yard completion by Heisman trophy runner-up Max Duggan. Georgia ran away with the game in the second half though, scoring 3 unanswered touchdowns to make the score 38-7.
Georgia’s roll continued in the second half with 4 more unanswered TDs to win by a final score of 65-7, breaking the record for the biggest win in postseason history, which had been set 7 days earlier by LSU’s 58-7 win over Purdue in the Citrus Bowl.
Devoted Georgia fan sophomore Gardner Clement enjoyed watching his team win the championship.
“It felt really good to win the championship, but it felt even better this year because we won it two years in a row,” said Clement.
Clement is optimistic for next season as well. “I feel pretty confident about next season because even though we [Georgia] lost a lot of players to the [NFL] draft, we have a very good recruiting class.”
Georgia is the first team to win back to back championships in over a decade, and many argue that head coach Kirby Smart has created College Football’s new top program. Georgia’s first game next season is at home against UT Martin on Sept. 2.
