Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses in Lexington, Va. have struggled to stay open; however, the Old Lex Mercantile has thrived under the new circumstances thanks to its loyal customers and innovative ways to shop. Now, Old Lex Mercantile is taking the opportunity to pay forward the kindness of the community.

Located on West Nelson Street, the Old Lex Mercantile has seen a spike in sales this past year, allowing owners Lai and Betsy Lee to give back to the community during this time of need. The Lees have decided to donate five percent of January sales to Rockbridge Area Relief Association and the Community Table.

Betsy Lee says, “we feel it’s only right to help ‘pay it forward’ to two great organizations whose missions focus on providing good food to those in need.”

In the store’s monthly newsletter, Lee offers a “sincere thanks” to everyone who supported the Old Lex Mercantile in the past year and announces their newest way to give back.

Lee says, “through our success, we can take extra steps to lift up others in our community, we all win.”

In addition to giving back to the community, the business is creating innovative ways to shop. The store now offers a curb-side pick up lane, online orders, delivery, and even private shopping hours in the early morning.

In their newsletter from Dec. 28, 2020, Lee says that they have sold, “over 1,000 pounds of Chicken Salad, 700 Chicken Pot Pies, 315 pans of Chicken Enchiladas, nearly 3,100 Raspberry Bars, and much, much more.”

This community-minded business has thrived throughout the pandemic because of its loyal customers and its commitment to giving back.
