The Trivium and The Prowler Offer Different Windows Inside RCHS

At Rockbridge County High School, there are two classes offered that, from the outside, may seem very similar. Photojournalism and Journalism are two of RCHS’ elective classes offered and while they have very similar names, what happens in each class is very different.

Photojournalism is home of “The Trivium,” which is an award winning yearbook that can be purchased by RCHS students each year.

Co-Editor in Chief Ashley Tyree has been on the Trivium staff for three years.

“On a day-to-day basis I ask people questions, help other students, brainstorm ideas for my own [yearbook] spreads, and currently I research events that have happened in the past year [at RCHS],” said Tyree.

Journalism creates Wildcat Weeklys and produces “The Prowler,” a newspaper website full of articles of many different topics for the school and the public to enjoy.

Editor-in-Chief Reagan Woody has been a member of Journalism for three years and this is her first year as Head Editor.

“As the Editor-in-Chief, I spend an average day in the Journalism class writing articles, leaving my desk to go and conduct interviews, taking photographs and filming footage, or editing other reporter’s articles. On occasion, I edit together broadcast packages to accompany my articles,” said Woody.

The main focus of Photojournalism is to produce the yearbook for the RCHS student body. The class works on the yearbook every day for the entire year. Journalism focuses on producing weekly videos to send out to the student body while also writing articles to post on their website.

“The point of Journalism at RCHS is to be able to provide an accessible way for students to consume news that is associated with the school,” said Woody. “The Prowler differs from the photojournalism class, because Journalism is more focused on reporting news often.”

Photojournalism focuses on one thing, the yearbook, while Journalism is always producing something different to entertain RCHS.

“ Yearbook is about telling stories from students’ perspectives and allows the students to look back on these memories and stories through our work,” said Tyree.
Both of these classes are working hard every day to be able to give back to the student body and the RCHS community. They focus on different things but still have one goal and that is to create something to share and be proud of.
