On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Rockbridge County High School golf team placed third out of four teams at Lake Monticello golf course. This was a non-district match with Monticello High School, Fluvanna County High School, Rockbridge County High School, and Wilson Memorial High School. The tight fairways and water made this course challenging for all the teams competing.
Monticello came in first, Wilson Memorial came in second, the ‘Cats placed third, and Fluvanna rounded it out in fourth place. Sophomore Joe Vargas led the team, shooting a 44 on the difficult nine-hole course, senior Harrison Tanner came in second with a 46, and sophomores Parker Flint and Davis Welsh came in third for the team, both shooting a 47.
Flint was surprised how difficult the course was and had to change how he approached the holes.
“Much of the course was either hazardous or out of bounds. It was different from every course that we’ve played this year,” Flint said. “You definitely had to be smart about where you hit, and it depended on what kind of club you used.”
Senior Dean Fafatas shot a 48 at the course and speaks about the difficulty of the course.
“There were a lot of out of bounds and the course was pretty long and tight with tree line fairways. The greens were hard,” Fafatas said.
The ‘Cats golf team will compete at the Ironwood golf match in Staunton, hosted by Wilson Memorial High School on Monday, Sept. 15.
