In the varsity football’s first district game of the season, the ‘Cats fell to the Turner Ashby Knights 44-6. Despite the difficult loss, it was already an improvement from last year’s game, when the Knights won 56-13.
Leading the ‘Cats offense was senior Andrew Kelly, who scored their only touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter. Despite some good drives, the offense was unable to convert on third down, giving the ball back to the Knights often.
Turner Ashby turned the heat up early, scoring seven touchdowns in the first half alone. Despite missing two-point conversions and extra points, the Knights’ firepower on offense, particularly with their passing game, beat the ‘Cats defense early.
First-year head coach Zachary Rhodenizer emphasized the need to increase team efficiency this season.
“We are focusing on perfecting the offense and the defense so that when we call a certain play, we get all 11 guys moving in the right direction,” Rhodenizer said. “TA is probably the toughest opponent we’ll play in the regular season, and I thought that the kids did execute pretty well most of the game. I think moving forward, they’re going to continue to improve.”
The Wildcats will return to action this Friday, Sept. 12 at Staunton High School.
