A favorite holiday tradition of most locals in Rockbridge County is Downtown Lexington’s annual Christmas Parade. With themes ranging from Christmas Cookie Catastrophe and Dancing on Main, this seasonal night has brought people from all over Rockridge to celebrate our community and bring Christmas spirit for many years. The parade has served as a great opportunity to promote local businesses and organizations and increase spirit in the community. This year the theme was announced to be “Sounds of the Season.” This theme determined how the floats will be decorated and gave a requisite for judging.

On Dec. 2, the streets of Lexington were teeming with floats and organizations ranging from our very own Marching Wildcats to the long-awaited arrival of Santa Clause.

Junior Haedyn Hartless describes his experience performing in the parade on behalf of the Marching Wildcats.

“I love performing in the Christmas parade because it is the last time that the marching band gets to play as a group. I think it’s nice to be able to represent Rockbridge in such a public event for the city,” said Hartless.

Ms. Henk talks about how she values the parade and its influence on our school community.

“I love seeing the students in a different setting. It’s important to represent the school in a positive and fun way,” said Henk.

Addie Wright gives her opinion on the Rockbridge Parade and its effect on the community.

“The Christmas parade is always one of my favorite Holiday traditions. I love seeing the community get involved and seeing everyone just a little happier than usual. I also love how it brings people together. Most people who go are from outside of Lexington but still attend because it’s such a great event where we can all come together to remember how lucky we are to live in Rockbridge,” said Wright.

She goes on to describe the impact on RCHS.

“Having our Marching Wildcats in the parade really helps bring some RCHS spirit to the mix and it’s fun being able to see student participation,” said Wright.

Overall, the Lexington Christmas Parade is always a smashing hit. While we still don’t know the results of which float and organization won the theme, it’s a unanimous opinion that this event is a great way to bring the community together and spread Christmas spirit. Despite the cold weather, the smiling faces and increased community spirit makes this night worth it.
