Virginia’s newly appointed governor, Abigail Spanberger, had the honor of delivering the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on Feb 24, 2026. Spanberger’s swift 12 minute response delivered a strong rebuttal to the claims in Trump’s 107 minute address.
Spanberger chose to speak from the House of Burgesses in Colonial Williamsburg. This location, a living history museum rather than a traditional seat of power, reinforced her message of returning to foundational American values. In contrast, Trump spoke from the Capitol with a tone that emphasized urgency and strength, declaring that “America is reclaiming its destiny” and warning that “our nation cannot survive if we allow chaos at our borders and crime in our cities.”
Trump used a fear-inducing approach while discussing topics such as crime and immigration, stating that “we will not let our communities be overrun” and criticizing the Democratic Party by claiming that their policies had “put American families at risk.” His rhetoric focused heavily on threats and the need for control.
Spanberger, however, framed her message around the American Dream rather than the power of the federal government. She emphasized unity and honesty, saying, “The American Dream is not built on fear — it is built on opportunity, hard work, and trust in one another.” She used her setting to call for plain and honest truth-telling, arguing that “every minute spent sowing fear is a minute we are not solving the real problems facing American families.” She also focused on economic concerns, adding that “families don’t need more political theater — they need lower costs, better jobs, and real solutions.”
Spanberger mentioned the state of Virginia multiple times throughout her speech and emphasized her commitment to the Commonwealth. In contrast to Trump’s speech, which addressed broad national threats, Spanberger spoke directly to individual Americans, grounding her message in everyday experiences. She explained, “What I heard from Virginians on the campaign trail was not fear, it was a desire for stability, affordability, and a government that listens.”
Despite anticipating backlash from Republicans, Spanberger remained direct in her criticism. She challenged the president by asking, “Is the president working to make life more affordable for you and your family? Is the president working to keep Americans safe — both at home and abroad? Is the president working for you?” She then answered firmly, “We all know the answer is no.” She also added, “Leadership is not about dividing people — it is about bringing them together to solve problems.”
As Virginians, I believe we should all be incredibly proud of how brave and strong our governor is. Her willingness to stand firm and speak directly to the American people demonstrated a commitment not just to Virginia, but to the values of honesty, unity, and progress.
