In honor of the newest Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, releasing on May 22, I thought it would be a good idea to rank every Star Wars movie. There have been 12 movies in the Star Wars franchise. There are nine main movies called episodes and three separate movies that contribute to the main story.
- The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi is by far the worst Star Wars movie ever. The overall plot is not that bad, but there are certain plot points and story decisions that make no sense. A good example is Finn and Rose’s storyline; it adds very little to the story, and it just wastes time. Another scene that is really cool in practice but a flop in execution is Rey and Kylo Ren’s fight with the Praetorian Guards. There are many moments where a guard could stab someone or disarm Rey or Kylo but they just don’t. These are just a few problems with The Last Jedi, and trust me there are many more.
- The Rise of Skywalker. The Rise of Skywalker is not the worst but it is still not good. The Rise of Skywalker has many of the same problems as The Last Jedi. The story is convoluted and has many plot holes and inconsistencies. The major issue is Snoke. In The Force Awakens Snoke is meant to be the main antagonist but in The Last Jedi he is killed very quickly, then we find out in The Rise of Skywalker that Snoke is just a cheap clone of Darth Sidious. Another bad plot point is Rey’s force abilities, mainly her force lightning ability. It is established in other Star Wars media that Force lightning takes years to master. But Rey just gets really mad and magically uses some of the most powerful force lightning ever. These are just some of the many problems with The Rise of Skywalker
- Solo A Star Wars Story. Solo was the third spin off type movie in the Star Wars franchise. Solo has some very cool and interesting plot points and scenes, but those moments are dwarfed by the bad. The apex of the movie is a great example of how bad the movie is after robbing a train where many of the crew members die and surviving the Maw Cluster on the Kessel run Han Solo and Chewbacca just decide to flip sides and help the people that have been trying to kill them for almost the entire movie. Then there is L3-37 which is another can of worms that I could go on for hours talking about how bad of a character she is.
9.Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Clone Wars is the only animated Star Wars movie. It has the main trio from The Clone Wars show of Anakin Skywalker, Asoka Tano, and Obi Wan Kenobi. The Clone Wars is where we meet Asoka for the first time, and the battle of Christophsis is really cool. Sadly that is where the goods end. The Clone Wars has at some point bad animation. But the major problem is the story. The Clone Wars story is no different than a three episode arc from The Clone Wars show. So there was no need to make a movie out of an arc, just make it a regular arc in The Clone Wars show.
- The Force Awakens. The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars movie that Disney released. It has some cool ideas. But those ideas in most instances are screwed up. Rey is the main problem. Rey is just a worse version of Luke Skywalker, she is from a backwater desert planet, she has the force, and she is really good at flying. All of those things are applicable to Luke.
- The Phantom Menace. The Phantom Menace is the first in the prequel trilogy. The Phantom Menace suffers from the same problems as the rest of the prequels, George Lucas. Lucas has phenomenal ideas for a sci-fi franchise, but he is a bad script writer. The dialogue in the prequels is exceptionally bad. And then there is Jar Jar Binks. Jar Jar is a good and bad character. He is supposed to be a comic relief but he is overplayed most of the time.
- Attack of the Clones. If you thought the dialogue was bad in The Phantom Menace get ready. Attack of the Clones has some great moments, the first battle of Genosis, The starship battle between Obi Wan Kenobi and Jango Fett. But the dialogue is so bad. The famous “I don’t like sand” moment is engraved into every movie fan’s mind when it comes to bad dialogue.
- A New Hope. A New Hope is the movie that started it all. There is little to criticize in this movie, but it is still not perfect. The pacing is all over the place. It is slow on Tatooine and fast throughout the rest of the film. On the contrary the film did a very good job establishing the empire as powerful villains.
- Return of the Jedi. Return of the Jedi is a very good end to the original trilogy. There are many great moments throughout the film. Darth Vader’s death scene is great, and so is the battle of Endor. Now the problems. The pacing is weird at times and the Ewoks. The Ewoks are good and bad at the same time. They add and take away from the overall story.
- Empire Strikes Back. The best of the original trilogy. Everyone in the movie is great. The empire is menacing and threatening. The rebels display a strong sense of desperation throughout the movie. Lando is a great new addition to the cast and Cloud City is really cool. Although there are some boring moments throughout the film.
- Rogue One. Rogue One is the second spin off film in Star Wars. Rogue One has a fantastic story and amazing characters. Rogue One is elevated by the show Andor. Jyn Erso is a great protagonist and a very welcomed surprise was K-2SO. K-2SO is a former imperial security droid that was reprogrammed by the rebellion. K-2SO is funny and a fantastic addition to the cast.
- Revenge of the Sith. Revenge of the Sith is the best Star Wars movie ever. The story is great, the score fits the film perfectly, and the acting is top notch. It is the climax of the prequel trilogy. I could spend days talking about how good this movie is. Revenge of the Sith similarly to Rogue One is elevated by a show.
