When thinking about some of the most successful female pop superstars of the twentieth century, it’s impossible to leave Olivia Rodrigo off the list.
At only 23 years old, Rodrigo has already gained nearly 30 billion streams for her songs on major music streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. Her hits such as “driver’s license,” “vampire,” and “bad idea right?” have defined the pop and rock music scenes of the 2020s.
Rodrigo has released two albums this far into her career: “SOUR” (2021) and “GUTS” (2023). Now, she has announced her highly anticipated third album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” which is set to release on June 12.
Prior to announcing the upcoming release, Rodrigo stated it would be her “most experimental” work to date in an interview with Vogue.
As part of album promotion, she also released the album’s lead single, “drop dead,” on April 17.
The single comes with a music video of Rodrigo exploring and dancing in the halls of France’s Palace of Versailles, commissioned by Louis XIV in the seventeenth century.
In the song, which will set the tone for the album, Rodrigo sings of the exhilarating rush that comes with experiencing love at first sight, saying “[I’m] the most alive I’ve ever been / but kiss me and I might drop dead.”
RCHS Latin teacher Patrick Bradley, a fan of Rodrigo’s, was curious about the potentially ambiguous meaning of the words “drop dead” prior to the song’s release.
“The title makes you think it will be another bitter song going at an ex-lover and telling them to drop dead, but it’s really the ‘drop dead in love’ version! Classic Olivia Rodrigo,” Bradley said.
Rodrigo’s signature pop-rock production comes through in “drop dead,” which can be attributed to her long-time producer Dan Nigro, who has also collaborated with stars like Carly Rae Jepsen, Chappell Roan, and Conan Gray.
“drop dead,” receiving over 10 million streams on the day of its release, marks the biggest lead single debut for Rodrigo, whose other lead singles have gained billions of streams.
Many fans have speculated that “drop dead” and other songs of the album will reflect on her recent relationship and breakup with British actor Louis Partridge, whom she dated for nearly two years before separating in late 2025.
Either way, music fans should be thrilled for the release of her new album, which is shaping up to be an exciting evolution of Rodrigo’s music and songwriting.
