At the end of February, Model UN is taking a trip to the University of North Carolina. Besides all the weekend simulations, the club is working towards their goal of going on this trip. The simulations are about bringing awareness to current events and appreciation for international affairs. Model UN is a club that simulates the United Nations and other groups. In this club, your public speaking skills are very important. Another purpose of the club is global citizenship. The presidents are Sara Topasna and Leo Decanini.

Senior Zhyasia Singleton is in the Model UN club and will be attending the trip.

“Since Mr. Gallagher is our sponsor, he had to calculate all of the money that goes into the event. This included transportation, the hotel, and conference fees. We had to fill out a form in order to be picked but even if you filled out the form you still may not be picked if you don’t have enough experience. I’m going because I’ve gone to a lot of simulations and so that qualified me to be one of the top people other than the leadership,” said Singleton.

To help out with the trip, the club raised money by having a fundraiser. Senior Andrew Brannon was selected to go on the trip by a survey that Mr. Gallagher put together for students interested in the trip.

“I want to go because it is a great opportunity to learn, and help with my public speaking,” said Brannon.

Model UN has a lot of boxes to check before going on this trip including: food, hotel costs, etcetera.

Senior Saara Basu talks about the costs of the trip.

“We had a fundraising online auction in December in order to try to alleviate the costs of hotel rooms, etc. then, we signed up for a certain amount of slots for the conference and eventually they sent back a list of positions. We pick our positions, the seniors get seniority and then write a background guide on our position, which is like researching our country and their position on the topic we’re debating,” said Basu.

The Model UN club has worked diligently to make this trip happen. The trip is a great way to get the club ready for conferences and speaking on what they believe in. It is a very good program.
