My son (Fintan, 8th grade) and I started playing disc golf in April 2020, when it seemed like a good idea to do stuff outside. We were sitting at a picnic table at Montgomery Hall Park in Staunton and Fintan spotted a disc golf basket and asked me what it was. We checked it out, and the rest is history! We couldn’t believe our luck when we discovered that there is an awesome 18 hole course at W&L. I enjoy getting outside and getting some exercise while also playing a game. I also enjoy the Disc Golf community — we have RCDGC events every week, and I enjoy playing with all the other members of the club. There are PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) tournaments that happen all the time, usually on weekends. Virginia is a pretty good place to be if you like playing in tournaments — there are lots of great courses and lots of organizations that run tournaments. My son and I played in our first tournament in September of 2021 in Bedford County. Since then, we’ve played in 60-70 tournaments. This Saturday, we are playing in a tournament at The Miller School in Crozet, not far from Charlottesville. They have two 18 hole courses at the school, designed by one of their math teachers! I’m playing in the MA50 division (for ages 50-59), and my goal is to win. I also want to play well and score well according to my realistic expectations (and win). Disc Golf would be better if it was a high school sport! We had a team for a minute last year, and actually competed in an event with 5 other high schools, but the organization that ran that event no longer exists. The RCHS team did win that event, so I guess Wildcat Disc Golf is undefeated. If there are any RCHS students who are interested in disc golf, they should come talk to me, Hamelman, or Youngdahl about it! I have two boxes of discs that were donated to the school by a couple disc manufacturers when we tried to start a team. I would love to give them away to interested Wildcats!

Gresham has been a part of many of the RCHS sports teams, but this year is focusing on swim both in the fall and winter seasons. She also has a passion for traveling, and loves going places with cool nature and wildlife.
