To get into the fall spirit, many people read books to get cozy and feel at home. Sitting next to the fire with a blanket, a book, and a nice cup of hot cocoa always gets me in a calm mood. There are many genres of books that people read, such as murder mystery, romance, dystopian, historical fiction, and thriller.
Murder mystery books usually have characters who are trying to solve a murder case, such as “A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder”by Holly Jackson, “One Of Us Is Lying” by Karen M. McManus and “The Naturals” by Jennifer Lynn Barnes.
Romance books are books where two characters fall in love, such as “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover, the “Shatter Me” series by Tahereh Mafi, and the “Heartstopper” novels by Alice Oseman.
Dystopian books are books set in a futuristic town where the government is soon overtaken by the town, such as “The Hunger Games” written by Suzanne Collins, the “Divergent” series by Veronica Roth, and “The Maze Runner” by James Dashner.
Historical fiction books are made up characters and stories set in a real historic event such as “Words of Fire” by Jennifer A. Nielsen, “The Boy In The Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne, and “The War That Saved My Life” by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.
Thriller books are stories where the character goes through high-stake situations and tend to cause fear in a reader, such as “The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden, “The Guest List”by Lucy Foley, and “ The Inheritance Games” by Jennifer Lynn Barnes.
Overall, fiction books can help people learn new things and escape to a new world. Nonfiction books are full of facts on a topic.
Authors are always writing new stories for us to read. The highly anticipated second book of “The Moonfall” series and “The Ballad Of Falling Dragons” by Sarah A. Parker are both coming out in 2026. The book “The Swan’s Daughter” is also coming out in 2026 and is a romance story.
Junior Ashley Kauffman is reading a nonfiction book about early medicine.

“I am reading ‘The Poisoner’s Handbook’ by Deborah Blum. It is about learning how poison and forensic medicine in the early 20th century,” Kaffman said. “I would recommend it to others. I give it five out of five stars.”
Some students enjoy reading fantasy books and like the mythological creatures and the adventures that the characters go on. They also read them to figure out the theme that is at the end of the book.
For Freshman Morgan Kelly, she enjoys reading fantasy for the fun characters the story has to offer.
“I am reading ‘Legendary,’ which is book two of the ‘Carnaval’ book series. It is about a magical game that messes with their minds until they’re constantly questioning what’s real and what’s not,” Kelly said. “I would recommend it to others. I would also rate it a five out of five stars.”
Dystopian books have an element of the government taking over or controlling the setting
Sometimes dystopian books take place in the future and the setting contains a lot of technology.
For Sophomore Abigail Guashpa, dystopian books are a common pick.
“I am reading ‘Divergent’ by Vironic Roth. It is like the ‘Hunger Games,’ but without all of the killing,” Guashpa said. “ I would recommend it to others. I would rate it a three out of five stars.”
For Freshmen Gabriella Miller, romance books are what get her in the Christmas mood.
“I am reading ‘Regretting You’ by Colleen Hoover. It is about a mother – daughter rel
ationship that struggles through tragedy and makes it out in the end,” Miller said “ I would recommend it to others. I would rate it a five out of five stars.”
If you need a good book to read, ask your friend who is always reading a good book. Every once in a while, I open a good book and explore the magical word of reading.
