The life of an exchange student is a journey of cultural immersion, independence, and personal growth.
It is a mix of challenges and rewards, involving cultural diversity and new relationships. Students gain independence and learn about different customs by living with a host family and attending a local school, which can lead to academic benefits and a broader worldview.
As an exchange student my experience includes both the good and bad.
Being away from home is not easy. There were several times I felt homesick. I felt excluded from everything and never really found a place to fit into.
Sometimes I even struggled with language barriers, it is quite confusing to transition from one language to another suddenly.
People have a lot of misconceptions about certain cultural norms which sometimes get really frustrating to answer. Overall adapting to a completely new and different culture was quite hard.
But with the bad comes good as well. This program has allowed me to share my diverse culture with different people. I have made some amazing friends who always help me around high school. I get to experience an entirely different culture and get to go to so many new places. It is fun when people ask me many questions and are curious to know what Bangladesh is like.
I got to go trick or treating and went to homecoming for the very first time, and it was definitely a wonderful and fun experience.
And the people who really are trying their best to make my exchange year memorable are my host parents. Everyday they try to take me to local parks, sometimes stargazing, or maybe going out for dinner. I’ve been able to share my problems with them.
If anyone asked me which moment I’d want to relive again, I’d definitely say my exchange year.
This definitely feels like a dream. I never really thought I would be traveling so far away from home all by myself. Sometimes everything feels unreal. I surely do feel proud of myself knowing that I’ve come so far in life.
I’ll always cherish the memories that I’ve made so far and am definitely grateful for the people who were a part of it to make my journey special.
