Every year exchange students come from all over the world to study at RCHS. This year we have five exchange students that came to spend their school year with us. They bring their holiday traditions with them and share them with their host family to make them feel more at home. Their tradition shows who they are and part of their culture. TFor exchange student Juan Kim, in his country they celebrate a holiday like American Thanksgiving.
“I am from South Korea and we celebrate Chusesk and Seollnal. During these holidays we hang out as a family and eat. We also play Korean board games,” Kim said. “Especially on Chuseok, we make food which is called songpyeon together. It’s a traditional Korean food,”
Doing these traditions in America helps them to feel comfortable being here and it brings a little of their home to America.
For exchange students Lucas Garippe Johann, in his country they celebrate a holiday with large groups of people.
“I am from Brazil and we celebrate the carnival. During the carnival me and my family hang out with friends,”Johann said.
For exchange student Vinny Fernandez, in his country they celebrate a holiday with their family.
“ I am from Brazil and we celebrate the carnival. During the carnival we like to hang out as a family and spend time with one another,” Fernandez said.
If you see any exchange student in the hall stop and ask them about their home country. It is helpful to learn more about different cultures and how people celebrate holidays.
