Every year, the history department takes a trip to enhance student learning. This school year, VA and US History students are going on a field trip to Richmond to visit a history museum. Students are leaving for the field trip Feb. 27. The trip is aimed to help students connect with the stuff they are learning.
Planning the trips takes time and effort to put together a trip students will engage in and enjoy. The history teachers work hard together in meetings to put plans together and bounce off ideas.
“We’ve been planning the trip since really the beginning of the year. Ms. Williamson came to me with an idea and we bounced some things back and forth. I would say probably since about August or September,” Clay said.
Students will be learning about the Civil War .The teachers have communicated with the museum about different activities that the student can connect with what they are learning. The teachers have also planned different activities instead of just walking around.
“We contact the museum, talk about different programs that they have to offer, look at ones that we think are the most interesting for kids—so this year we’ll be doing one on Civil War medicine, which is hopefully pretty interesting. And then we also correspond with the bus companies to make sure we have nice comfy buses rather than school buses for us to get over there, “Williamson said.
Not a lot of students are going on the trip, so teachers are hoping more students sign up to go. But the students that are going are excited to see what the trip has to offer. For Jade Newhall, she is excited to be with a large group.
“I am excited to learn about history with my friends,” Newhall said.
The trip is aimed towards what students are studying for the SOL. Students that are attending are ready to learn different things that could help them pass. For Senate Pignato, he is excited for the learning experience of the trip.
“I am excited to learn about the combat that ensued,” Pignato said.
The history department takes a lot of different trips. In March, the seniors are going to Washington D.C to see the different museums and monuments. The history teachers hope to take more trips in the future.
