The music department rang in the holiday season with their annual winter concert under the direction of a new music director. The performance was held on Dec. 7 and featured the chorus, jazz band, wind ensemble, as well as concert band.

The three bands and chorus performed on stage for an audience that cheered everyone on.

“I think the performance went very well. We worked hard and it turned out great. The stress from the huge audience pumped me up for my solo,” said junior EJ Charleton.

The students spent most of their class time rehearsing the pieces together, and are encouraged to take their instruments home to work on sections that they needed to personally improve.

“Ms. Hess [the director] also reserves class time every now and then for us to practice with our individual instrument sections so we can work out mistakes together,” said junior Jazz band member Charlie Hepner.

The bands spend time rehearsing songs that have unique styles, such as swing. The students enjoy working with Hess because she tries to make rehearsals more fun.

“My favorite part about band is the overall environment. It’s so positive and we really work together to become a better band,” said sophomore Ravin Carico.

In rehearsals, band students improved their skills and practiced new musical techniques. Performances such as the winter concert help to prepare students auditioning for honor bands.

“Being in band this year has affected me by learning more about my instrument and music. Mainly because I am a clarinet player, and so is Ms. Hess, so she is loaded with clarinet tips and secrets. Due to this, I have gotten better at my instrument, including higher chair placements in honor bands,” said senior Devin Kindle.

The band department allows for students to experience new opportunities and perform for their parents, teachers, and peers. Students learned new techniques over the semester that enhanced their performance. The music department will hold another concert in March.
