Each year, incoming freshmen attend the CTE fair to explore CTE-related electives. There are many CTE classes offered at RCHS, and this year the rising freshmen get a front seat view at what it’s like to participate in these hands-on classes. This year, The CTE fair was on Wednesday, Nov. 19., with students from certain CTE classes helping the rising freshmen learn about the different elective possibilities.
Senior River Jenkins helped photojournalism and photography teacher Brian Hammelman with the photojournalism and photography class introduction for the new students.
“The fair went great, all of the 8th graders were a little shy, but I think they enjoyed it. My part in the presentation was to help introduce our photography program as someone who has taken it all four years,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins explains what his role was during the fair,
“I showcased the opportunity that Photography III Honors students had last year to put on The Barn Burner, our public art showing. My main goal however was to introduce the Dark Room Club, something I love dearly. I have been the president for two years and one of the only active members for three. I really want to make sure it continues after I graduate this year, so I tried to convey how fun and cool it is,” Jenkins said.
Senior Alyssa Thompson gave tours of the firefighting room to rising 8th grade students.
“During the CTE fair, the kids were shown the premises of the fire class. We got dressed for them while talking to them about the gear,” Thompson said.
Thompson explains what she taught to the 8th graders.
“We told why the gear is a different color on the inside than the outer layer and why we were laying all of the gear on the inside, and the different types of gloves we use and how we choose what gloves to wear,” Thompson said.
Junior Emma Johnson explained how she helped with the culinary class,
“For the culinary program, we just allowed them to decorate their own cookies and get them excited about culinary and about our program. We talked a lot about what we do here and all that we cook as well as the catering that we do for so many people and how we’re making turkeys right now. We talked about how we just finished donating bread and how it’s two periods long.” Johnson said.
Senior John Grim explains how he gave tours of the Auto Tech room to the 8th graders,
“We talked to the 8th graders about what we do in our shop class. We take apart the engines, we do oil changes, we do suspension, we do steering, we do brakes, and we do electrical wiring. For the beginning classes, we took apart a lawn mower engine and did simple things like wiring the radios,” Grim said.
The CTE fair helped incoming freshmen learn more about their choice of classes, as well as explore the high school.
