With the release of the second “Wicked: For Good” movie, the show is experiencing a huge growth in popularity, drawing in people who may not have been familiar with the Broadway production before. The new excitement highlights how important “Wicked” is becoming in current pop culture. It’s not just as a musical, but now as it has become a movie, has been able to reach more people than ever.
Students were asked: “What is the best song from the musical ‘Wicked?’” The poll revealed how strongly people feel about the show’s iconic soundtrack.
“Defying Gravity” came out on top with 33% of the votes, making it the clear lead among the students. Its dramatic powerful message, and unforgettable final note by the one and only Cythia Erivo seems to tickle everyone’s fancy.
Many students explained that the song “feels empowering”, said Sophomore Marquis Corbin.
Others said it’s their favorite because “It leaves you on edge and excited for the next movie,” said Sophomore Cole Fine.
Freshman Emmilyn Kelly explains why she voted for Defying Gravity. “I love the way the song makes Elphaba feel like a queen, like how she should feel”, said Kelly.
Other songs received support as well, with “ What Is This Feeling?” next in line, and “Popular” following shortly after. Although none matched the numbers of “Defying Gravity,” the results show that students appreciate all the songs in the Wicked soundtrack.
Overall, the poll showed just how beloved the musical still is. Whether students liked the thrilling “Defying Gravity” or the slow romantic feel of “I’m Not That Girl,” the results showed that there is a song for everyone
