FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) is preparing for their annual state conference. At the conference, there are multiple competitions spanning many fields of expertise, such as Baking and Pastry, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Hospitality, Tourism & Recreation and plenty more.
Our FCCLA program led by Corey Wallace and McKenzey Robinson have had success at past conferences. (Mr. Wallace interview)
As they prepare for the upcoming conference, we asked participants about their events.
Junior Taliyah Richardson participates in cooking and fashion design. Richardson said she has goals to not only do well in her activities but also to grow as a person.
“My goal is to be the best I can in whatever I do but also to have great hospitality towards the people around me,” Richardson said.
Richardson looks forward to the competition
“I’m most excited about the events that we do while we’re there, fundraising or just getting to meet new people,” Richardson said.
Richardson believes that it is all about the mindset when preparing for the conference. “You have to have a big mindset. You have to always stay positive and be ready to be on the go,” Richardson said.
Sophomore Mackenzie Clemmer participates in the management of Thompson’s Turf War Game. The Thompon’s turf war event started in 2022 and it serves as a fundraiser for a scholarship honoring teacher Sandra Thompson.
Clemmer had big goals for this year and is hoping to compete at the next level.
“I am hoping to go to Washington D.C. for the national conference this year.” Clemmer said.
To prepare for the upcoming conference and try to achieve her goals, Clemmer and her partner Desirae Butler have practiced their speech every day.
“We have been saying our speech every day, multiple times a day for an hour or longer,” Clemmer said.
Clemmer said that she is most excited to talk with the people she met with last year.
“I’m most excited to be able to go and see the friends that I met last year and be able to present my project with my partner,” Clemmer said
The FCCLA state conference will be held in Virginia beach on April 10-12. The conference is very competitive but also very interesting because of all the events. We wish our wildcats the best of luck as they travel next weekend.
